Week 6 of Nutrition Expedition: Light and Dark

October 12-16, 2015

Light and Dark

What a brilliant group of "pupils" we have at Joyful Noise! This week in Nutrition Expedition, we learned all about how the pupils in our eyes dilate !

We first discussed how our pupils change size, depending on how light or dark it is. When it gets dark, our pupils get larger in order to allow more light to enter our eye. The opposite happens when it is light or we look into a bright light; our pupils get smaller in order to allow less light into our eye. This is actually caused by the iris (the colored area of our eye) opening and closing. I showed them a video of this very thing occurring in an eye. Now it was their turn to experiment! I gave each child a mirror and a flashlight, and they observed their own pupils dilating! So much fun :)
