Texture Walk!
Texture Walk!
We took a walk on the "texture" side this week in Nutrition Expedition! It was a final representation of the five senses we've been studying this month: touch! However, instead of using our hands, we used our feet!
In the Rec. Room, I set up a texture walk for all the children to explore. Using small poster board sheets, I attached items of different textures to the floor (felt, sandpaper, contact paper, bubble wrap, shelf liner, tiles, wood floor pieces, etc.). We talked about how the nerve endings in our skin send messages to our brain about how something feels, including texture, pain, and temperature. Here is a link to a really informative website about how our skin functions, along with some interesting experiments to try at home: Home Science Tools: Sense of Touch. The children took turns stepping on each texture and describing how they thought it felt on their feet. I loved hearing all of their observations!
Here are the weekly Super Sleuth questions to ask your child, followed by a video of the 4-year-old class doing the texture walk, and lots of photos:
Super Sleuth Questions
1. What is inside your skin that sends a message to your brain about what you're touching? (answer: nerves)
2. What was your favorite texture that you walked on this week?
