Week 42 of Nutrition Expedition: Watermelon Paper Plate Project!

July 20-24, 2015

Watermelon Paper Plate Project!

We took a little break from sampling healthy treats this week in Nutrition Expedition, and instead put our creative skills to good use. We read the book The Watermelon Seed, by Greg Pizzoli. This adorable story is about a little crocodile who LOVES watermelon! Chomp, chomp, chomp! He accidentally swallows a seed, and worries about all of the things that might happen:  vines growing out of his ears, a watermelon growing in his belly, his skin turning pink, just to name a few! You'll have to read the story for yourself if you want to find out what really happens with the ingested seed! After the story, the children were very curious about what would happen if they ate a watermelon seed. We had a big discussion about the digestion process, and what would eventually become of the seed (hint:  it doesn't actually sprout into a watermelon!) ;).

We then created our own watermelon slices out of paper plates cut into triangles. The children painted it to their liking; they looked good enough to eat! Be on the lookout for the finished product, coming to a cubby near you!
