Spring is the time for learning about plants and how they grow. This week I helped each class plant a couple carrots by cutting off the tops. I only have a little experience with gardening, so I am looking forward to learning right along with the kids. :)
3's Class
I started the lesson by reading a few pages of a gardening book. We learned that plants need, soil, water, air and sunlight.
I told the kiddos that we have to put rocks in the bottom of our containers so the water can drain. The plants won't want a bug puddle in the bottom.
A few friends came up one at a time and added a rock to either container.
I showed Brooks that the other container doesn't have very may rocks in it. :)
Next, I called the kids up one at a time to add potting soil to the rocks.
Next, I used a sharp knife to cut the tops off the carrots.
Next, I planted the carrot tops into the soil.
I talked with the class about how the plants will need sunlight. We decided to place the containers on a shelf that is close to the window so they can get as much sun as possible.
The 4's class wanted to have nutrition expedition outside :)
I am showing the class how to cut just the top of the carrot off for planting.
Sophia is adding potting soil to our containers.
Here, we are discussing what plants need: Sunlight, air, water, and soil.
I brought a book about gardening and showed the kiddos a few pages. :-)
We talked about why there are rocks in the bottom of the container. :)
The toddlers helped add potting soil to their container!
The toddler class was so engaged with this activity!
Scooping and dumping dirt is lots of fun!
I was surprised that at the end of this, we only had a small dirt pile on the floor! :-)
The 2's class was surprised when I pulled just the tops of the carrots out of the mystery bag!
The 2's came up one at a time to help add dirt to the carrot containers :-)
Audrey was very excited for her turn!
Lily is carefully adding the dirt...
Jax is looking to see how much dirt is inside....
Next, I showed the 2's how to plant the carrot tops in the soil. I told them we cover them up like they are going to bed :-)
Bodhi and Hendrick were the only kids awake in the nursery. The seemed to enjoy this activity!
