Meet Your Corn Farmer!
This week in Nutrition Expedition, Farmer Kelli dropped by with some information about how to grow corn! We checked out dried feed corn, corn seeds, and read a hilarious book!
To grow corn, you should plant your seeds in mid-late spring once the temperature reaches an average of 60 degrees. Seeds should be planted roughly 8 to 10 inches apart. You can expect a maturity time of at least 60-100 days. A few weeks after the silk appears on the ears of sweet corn, they are ready for harvest! Follow this link to learn more about the process.
After exploring a vial of corn seeds and an ear of dried feed corn, we read a really cute story; The Three Little Tamales, by Eric A. Kimmel. It's a delightful take on the story of the three little pigs, and follows three tamales as they outwit Senor Lobo, the "big bad wolf". The children were so engrossed in this story!
