Week 12 of Nutrition Expedition: Can You Guess What It Is? Squash!

November 28- December 2, 2016

Can You Guess What It Is? Squash!

What has seeds, grows on a vine, and is eaten in the winter months? Winter squash, which is what we'll be focusing on for the month of December!

We started out by reading the book Sophie's Squash, by Pat Zietlow Miller & Anne Wilsdorf. It's a delightful story about a young girl who adopts a butternut squash and names her "Bernice". Be sure to ask your child what the surprise was in the end!

In our "mystery bag", I brought with me three types of winter squash, all cut in half and wrapped in cellophane so that the children could see what they looked like inside:  an acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash. We talked about how squash grow from seeds, and all of the delicious things you can make with squash. Next week, Ms. Kathy is planning to make spaghetti squash for lunch, in place of pasta. We're really looking forward to it 😊!
