Week 4 of Nutrition Expedition: Can You Guess What It Is?

October 3-7, 2016

Can You Guess What It Is? Carrots!

What is crunchy, orange and grows UNDER the ground? A carrot, that's what! We pondered the clues and figured out right away what was in the mystery bag this week in Nutrition Expedition. We were surprised to learn that a carrot is actually the root of a plant! Who knew we could eat roots :)?!

After exploring a whole carrot (top and all), we talked a little about how they grow, which we'll "dig" into more next week. The part we can eat is actually under the dirt where we can't see it. We learned that the carrot absorbs all the nutrients and water from the soil in order to grow, and the leafy part at the top soaks up lots of sunshine to make food for the carrot. We read the book The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss, and watched a few short video clips (see below) about carrots, all while enjoying some crunchy carrot sticks.

The children have also really been enjoying this fun video:

Stay tuned for next week, when a certain carrot farmer will be paying a visit ;)
