Blueberry Baskets
for Sal
It was a blueberry bonanza in Nutrition Expedition this week! We started out by reading the classic book Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey. A Caldecott Honor recipient, Blueberries for Sal is a cute story about a little girl and her mother, who go out picking blueberries to store for the winter. Enter a mother bear and her cub, who are also out foraging for blueberries. To make a long story short, both Sal and the cub wander off from their mothers, get mixed up, but eventually find them in the end. The children really enjoyed this story!
We tasted fresh blueberries after reading the story; delicious (though some were a bit sour)! I also brought along an art project this week! Using blue paint, the children made fingerprints on paper to represent blueberries, then constructed a basket to keep them in with either popsicle sticks or brown paper strips. It was messy fun :) Check out the photos below:
