Farmer's Market Finds/Scavenger Hunt!
This week in Nutrition Expedition, I brought in a variety of vegetables that I picked up at the farmer's market over the weekend! The children had to guess what was in the mystery bag (organic carrots, purple asparagus, pickle cucumbers, salad turnips, red leaf lettuce, and red-skin potatoes). We talked about different things we can find while at the farmer's market; the older age groups even made a list of items for each letter of the alphabet! After exploring the produce that I brought, I provided nibble trays filled with each of the items for them to sample.
As a special adventure, I organized a field trip for all of Joyful Noise to the Wednesday opening of the farmer's market at Chinook Pier! We had over 50 children in tow as we walked down, quite a sight to behold! Upon arrival, I passed out a scavenger hunt chart with pictures of different fruits and vegetables to each of the children, and I instructed them to be on the lookout to see if they could find everything on their list (carrots, tomatoes, green beans, sugar snap peas, potatoes, asparagus, spinach, strawberries, and radishes). They were able to find everything but the green beans! A kind farmer from one of the stands even gave us a kohlrabi (a variety of cabbage) to take back to school with us! We had a blast! Below is a copy of our chart, if you would like to try this game on your next trip to the farmer's market:
