Can You Guess What It Is? Asparagus!
We're on to a new vegetable this week! What is green (or white or purple), looks like a stick, and has what looks like a flower on top? It's an asparagus! And boy, were they tasty!
I brought the mystery bag and gave the children these clues to try and guess what the mystery item was for the month of April. Once they figured it out, I showed them the stalks of asparagus that I brought: green and white! We discussed the benefits that asparagus provide for our bodies (vitamin A for our eyes, vitamin K for healthy blood and bone density, vitamin C for a healthy immune system, folate for our brain, etc.). Then, it was time to chow down! I sauteed the asparagus in a little olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Delicious!
While they were sampling the asparagus stalks, I read the book, The Mighty Asparagus, by Vladimir Radunsky. This humorous story is about a giant stalk of asparagus that appears one day in the middle of a king's courtyard. His queen wants it for her very own, but they have lots of trouble pulling it from the ground, even with the help of a rhino and a strong knight! To find out who is able to take the mighty asparagus down, you'll have to order your own copy!
