Pick-a-Pepper!
"Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where is the peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper picked?" In our bellies, of course! Wow, what a tongue twister! Although they were not pickled, we sure ate a LOT of fresh and delicious bell peppers :)
After a wonderful yoga session, I introduced our lesson this week by bringing out the "mystery bag". The children were encouraged to take a guess as to what was inside. I had a hard time tricking them, as many children in each classroom guessed a pepper! I also posed another question: why do you think it's called a bell pepper? We sure have a lot of smart and observant kiddos around here; they deduced that it looked like a bell, so that must be how it got it's name! We then tasted green, yellow, and red peppers. What a delicious sweet treat! The toddler class had a tent set up in their classroom this week as part of their camping theme, so they were able to have a pepper picnic in the tent! What fun! The infants loved exploring a whole pepper, looking at pictures of pepper plants, and some of the older infants got to try some peppers, as well.
Finally, I gave each child a "Pick-a-Pepper" chart, where they could circle their favorite pepper(s).
